How does the imperial w. european model of the day expand by establishing colonies and trade outposts?
The ordinance sets the model for creating states as americans move west. How does this contrast with the imperial w. european model of the day for expanding by establishing colonies and trade posts?
I'm assuming you meant the NW Ordinance.
It encouraged settlement, and not just trade. Population was a large factor in the NW Ordinance, while most European nations just said, "this is mine."
On the flip side, it betrays an assumption that all of middle North America was already, by default, "ours." Manifest Destiny existed, it seems, even before we got the LA Purchase.
(I am from the US, so all pronouns and possessive pronouns are meant to imply "the US".)
